Are tomatoes bad for acid reflux?
Common trigger
Tomatoes are acidic, and concentrated tomato products such as sauce, purée and ketchup are among the most commonly reported triggers. Fresh tomato in small amounts is often better tolerated.
Tips
- Try small amounts of fresh tomato before ruling it out.
- Swap tomato sauces for pesto (without too much garlic), olive oil or a creamy vegetable sauce.
Try instead
Roasted red pepper or butternut squash sauce
Is it a trigger for you?
Reactions vary a lot between people. Log tomatoes in the symptom diary for two weeks: it shows how often each food is followed by symptoms. Then try two weeks without it and compare.
